     Description

4400 square foot home perched on a hillcrest overlooking rooftops of
neighboring homes, with partial views of the nearby Saco River and
Old Orchard Beach can be seen from the cupola. The house is located
on the main road to the beach, a six-minute drive away.

This 5-bedroom house is large enough to find privacy even when
shared with a sizable group. On a lazy summer day, you might choose
to follow the sun around the house on porches that wrap around two
floors. The sunroom, with 19 windows, hanging plants and sunken
planters, feels cozy like a tree-house nestled in lilac.

Built in 1927 in the flamboyant Second Empire Style, the 1920’s-era
construction of this “period Victorian” explains why the home is
adorned with Art Deco features like the Egyptian inspired exterior
porch rails and geometric inlaid patterns in the hardwood floors.
The original windows and doors are in the Arts and Crafts style.

Set well back from the road with a deep front yard, the main
entrance is through the portico, a covered porch supported by double
and triple sets of columns. Step inside and experience a horizontal
sweep of open space from the grand parlor, through a broad foyer
with columns, through the living room with a brick fireplace, and
into a huge sunroom with built-in benches and sunken planters, 55
feet end to end. This home possesses distinctive original features
in abundance including wonderful moldings, inlaid hardwood floors,
crystal chandeliers, built-in cabinetry, and a wealth of French
doors.

The home contains thirteen rooms, including five bedrooms: the
master bedroom on the first floor (king), and two bedrooms on the
second and third floors (two queens, two singles and a double,
respectively). The first and second floors each have full modern
kitchens, living rooms, full baths and two private decks each. The
decor is a comfortable mix of antique and modern, with many Oriental
area rugs spread throughout.

The house was built for the newly wedded daughter and son-in law of
a prominent French family, whose descendents still live in the
homestead next door. Until four years ago, the original family
owned the house and preserved and maintained it with great care.

     Amenities

The house is furnished with everything you should need for
your visit, including a fully equipped kitchen, towels and bed
linens. Other amenities include TV/DVD, phone/Internet, audio
system, fireplace, outdoor furniture and gas grill. There is a
laundry area in the daylight basement.

     Attractions

The location is 30 minutes from Portland or Ogunquit, 15 minutes
from Old Orchard Beach or Kennebunkport, and just six minutes from
the beautiful beaches of Fortunes Rocks or Biddeford Pool. The
nature conservancy at Biddeford Pool is a terrific vantage point for
offshore islands and a lighthouse. On a clear day, the White
Mountains can be seen in the distance hovering like a mirage above
Old Orchard Beach. The Saco River public boat launch is a mile
away, as are kayak rentals for exploring the gorgeous Saco River.

Boston is a one-and-one-half-hour drive or can be reached via the
Amtrak Downeaster. The train terminal is a ten minute walk from the
house. Local car rental agencies will deliver a vehicle to the
house. Public transportation is available to the beaches in
Biddeford and Old Orchard, or to Portland.

Across the street is the scenic 30-acre Clifford Park with overlook
areas for viewing the White Mountains or the open ocean, miles of
hiking and biking trails through old granite quarries, a cascading
30-foot waterfall and tennis courts.

The downtown historic districts of Biddeford or Saco are a
delightful ten-minute walk. A recent influx of development has
spawned new cafes and ethnic restaurants. Sprawling historic mill
complexes are undergoing a transformation, as artisans, woodworkers
and scores of “creative economy” (yoga, websites, chocolate, coffee
and spa) businesses have gravitated to the unique, “funky,” and
affordable mill spaces along the banks of the Saco River.
The “Museum on the Streets” self-guided walking tour provides
background on area history and architecture. Spectacular river
views are made accessible with trails, a gazebo and benches.

     Rates

The house is available for rental from May through October at an $1800/week rate. A fifty-percent deposit is required at the time of rental, with the balance due one month before arrival date.
