     Attractions

ON ASSAGAO

Assagao is one of the tiniest and most peaceful villages of the Velhas
Conquistas of Bardez, tucked into the corner of northern Goa,
measuring about 7 kilometres in length and resting peacefully in
verdant hills covered in cashew groves.

Famous for the healing power of its spring water, its exquisite tropical
gardens and gentle breezes from the Arabian Sea, Assagao remains
relatively untouched by the growing tourism, despite being only 5km
minutes from the famous Anjuna Beach and 15 minutes from the very lively
Baga Beach. Mapusa, the market town, is 3km away and, although hugely
popular, has held onto its gloriously laid back Portuguese “sossegado”
atmosphere.

In Assagao you have the best of both worlds: utter peace and
tranquillity and yet a true sense of being in a community and being with
the local people. Here you can become immersed in their world and the
Goan way of living.
In idyllic Assagao you can relax in the lap of mother nature because it
is a serene, hill clad green valley. The visitor doesn't have to search
for bird watching sites because it's where one wakes up to the harmony
of sweet birdsong, bulbuls, woodpeckers and birds of colourful plumage.

The valley, populated by a Hindu-Catholic mix, is well known for its
age-old, white-washed church. The Church of St Cajetan is considered as
one of the ten best churches in Goa. In the valley too is situated the
Palotti Insititute of Philosophy and Oriental Religions.

The two parallel roads are connected by a cross road in a rectangular
residential area, with the centre being a cultivable paddy field laced
with coconut grooves. Quaint village mansions dot the village, which has
a couple of mineral water springs, and a time-worn landmark known as
"Cator".

You shouldn't be surprised to find Europeans stepping out from the
traditional Goan houses. They have either purchased old ruins and
renovated same for holidaying in India or rented for the time being.

Other important institutions in the village: International Animal
Rescue, Ayurvedic Massage Centre, El-Shaddai Children's Homes,
Ishapreema Old Age Home, etc.

Mapusa, is the local market town just 10 minutes over the hill, features
a bustling large outdoor market every day and into the evenings,
culminating into frenzy, on Fridays.

Mapusa is where you find, ATMs, broadband internet cafes, fruit, gifts,
and packed local restaurants serving meals all day for a few euros.
Wednesdays is the famous Anjuna Flea Market a must for first time
visitors together with the Saturday Night Ingo’s market which features
an outdoor stage with music and acts, food and some very interesting
artisan stalls.

Sun and Beaches

The nearest beach is Vagator which is 5 kilometres to the West. Beaches
stretch North and South for 180 kms, with warm seas, beach thali shacks
serving excellent food, beer, and are good places to spend your days.

Eating

In the evenings you can choose between the finest cuisine from any
nation you care to mention, including French, Italian, Russian, Israeli,
Tibetan, Nepalese and of course Indian. Some are organic, vegetarian
and vegan food is also available, and it is all of world class
standards.

Health and Fitness

Yoga is very well catered for with a number of different classes per day
at the Brahmani Yoga Centre, (formally Purple Valley Drop Centre)
There are two Yoga Shalas which are both located
in the grounds of the Hotel Bougainvillia about 3 kilometers from
WatsuGoa. Classes start early morning with Ashtanga, Mysore style,
followed by beginners classes. Early evening there is a yoga, meditation
and pranayma class with Emil Wendal. You can also swim at the Hotel
Bougainvilla for Rs 50/- a day.

Fun in the Sun

For the energetic, there is a brilliant skateboard bowl, paragliding
from the cliffs at Anjuna, and a Go-Cart Track.

Dancing

Tango classes in the evenings
Salsa at Tito’s, Baga
Trance music at the 9 Bar - every night from 8-10 above the Vagator
beach, leading on sometimes to parties elsewhere.

Animal Welfare

The International Animal Rescue Centre is based a short distance from
Little Paradise, and always welcome help with dog walking.

If you are able to come for longer and wish to travel down south or out
state, Enfield motorbike trips are close by
Coach and train trips to Hampi and other destinations are
possible.
