Minutes away is the Alpine Village of Helen, with its many unique
shops and restaurants, as well as the Chattahoochee River, which
flows through the middle of town. Here, in the summer months, tubing
and rafting are available. The immediate area also offers numerous
other outdoor activities, including hiking, bikeriding, boating,
fishing, and camping.
For shopaholics, Helen is a pleasure. But, if you still have money
left, Cleveland and Clarkesville can each be reached in less than a
half hour and Gainesville, the local hub, in no more than 45 minutes.
Cleveland, by the way, is the home of Babyland, which is where
Cabbage Patch Dolls are "born," and is a must for little girls (and
their grandparents who get stuck with the tab.)
If you are still looking for adventure, Tallulah Falls, near Clayton
is a beautiful trek, and filled with history. To the north are
Blairsville, with its flower festival, and Hiawassee, with its scenic
Lake Chatuge. All can be reached in less than an hour, as can the
borders of Tennessee and both Carolinas.
