     Attractions

Lo Scopetaccio is in the countryside, 2km (not much more than a mile)
away from Sassofortino, a medieval hilltop village characterised by
narrow winding streets and stone houses. From the village, you can
enjoy a spectacular view over the plains of the Maremma.

The area where Sassofortino is located is called Alta Maremma, since
the villages and castles of the area were built on the tops of hills
from which it was easier to protect the inhabitants during the dark
centuries of the Middle Ages. On a clear day it is possible to see the
sea: the view is breathtaking.

Sassofortino is a small village but it has all the services that you
might need: bars and restaurants, banks with ATM, a supermarket and
post office.

The nearby villages of Roccatederighi and Montemassi house other shops
and restaurants, and are both very beautiful in their own right.
Montemassi is home to the castle depicted in the Buon Governo painting
by Simone Martini located in the Palazzo Pubblico of Siena. The nearby
town of Roccastrada has a cinema, a theatre, several shops and
restaurants, two banks, a supermarket and much more.

The ruins of the castle called Sassoforte are one of the major
attractions in Sassofortino. The castle was built in the 12th century
and its ruins are still preserved in the woods near the village and
can be reached via beautiful hiking trails.

The area is particularly suited for people who love nature and the
outdoors, as there are a number of trails ideal for hiking, biking and
horseback riding. You can rent bikes in Roccatederighi, where there is
an excellent agency organising biking tours or creating itineraries
designed especially for you. There are also several farms in the area
which organise horseback riding tours. Trekking Roccastrada is an
association which provides information and suggestions for hikers.

Sassofortino is not only a perfect location for nature lovers, but
also for art lovers, and for those travellers who want to see the most
well-known sights in Tuscany as well as the less touristy areas of the
region. It is very close to the beautiful town of Massa Marittima and
to the Maremma with its wild nature and unspoilt coastline. The old
roads leading to Siena pass through woods, medieval villages and old
abbeys such as San Galgano Abbey, where you can admire the famous
sword in the stone.

Siena is easily reachable too, and so are the Val d'Orcia, Petriolo
Hot Springs and the beautiful villages and castles of the area, such
as Pari, Civitella Marittima, Monte Antico, Monte Amiata, Montalcino
and Poggio alle Mura (also known as Villa Banfi, the major producer of
Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G. wine).

If you love wine and good Italian food, then Sassofortino is perfect
for you. It is located in the Monteregio di Massa Marittima D.O.C.
wine region and it houses two interesting festivals every year: Sagra
del Maccherone, a type of home made pasta with different meat or
vegetarian sauces, and Festa della Castagna, a festival dedicated to
chestnuts, one of the most popular seasonal foods in the area.

From Sassofortino you can easily reach other areas where popular wines
are produced, such as Montecucco wine, Brunello and Rosso di
Montalcino, Morellino di Scansano and several other excellent wines.

In the area, you can also find several excellent restaurants which
deserve a visit and which will make your holiday unforgettable.

Lo Scopetaccio is the ideal vacation rental for people who want to
divide their time in Tuscany between daytrips to popular sights,
relaxing days on the beach or on the golf course in Gavorrano, and the
peace of a countryside cottage with its own private garden and
swimming pool.
