For those of you who like to walk, the well marked scenic trails
alongside the high bluffs of the Waiparous Creek provide splendid
views of the canyon and tall hills, for which this area is famous. The
trails begin at the west side of the village, where you can simply
park your car and walk into another world.
You can picnic in the high country by taking a short drive west, where
you will overlook the levees of the Ghost River facing the shear
bluffs of Phantom Craig. Looking towards the west you will see the
lakes that lead to Minnewanka, originally called Lake of Evil Waters,
which can be approached by walking past Dead Man Lakes, now called
Chain Lakes.
Here in the Canyon of the Ghost River and the Waiparous Creek you can
hike along the creek to the northwest. Find the deep clear pools
gouged out of the granite by the rushing waters of the creek, where
treasures for the fly fisherman abound. This is a catch and release
area meaning all the big ones are still there.
For the hardy of heart, the river and the creek provide a great
location for a quick dip, refreshing and invigorating. For those who
find the river a little too fresh, the creek is about ten degrees warmer.
The history of this fabulous retreat is well documented in a volume
called the Tall Hills. In this area we have had visits from the famous
and infamous such as the Sundance Kid and the original Virginian,
after whom the T.V. serial was modeled.
The last recorded Indian battle took place at the junction of the
Ghost River and the Bow River.
Canmore, a short thirty minute drive away, provides terrific options
for dinner and a great way to spend the evening. Along the way, stop
and see the MacDougal Church. The area is filled with many things to
do and see. The springtime exhibits the first flower, the elusive
Crocus. Later in the season one will enjoy the beauty of the Brown
Eyed Susan and the Fire Weed, which mingle with the Tiger Lily, Blue
Bell, Snow on the Mountain and dozens more. Nature is generous in the
high country.
Some of the best skiing, golfing, fishing you can imagine and the
scenery is breathtaking.
Sunshine Village Ski Resort, Mount Norquay Ski Resort, Lake Louise,
Banff National Park, Kananaskis Golf course, Canmore, Calgary and the
Bow River are a few destinations many people only dream of visiting.
Riverside Cabin is within a short driving distance to all of these
wonderful locations.
This is a true vacationers paradise.
