 Description

Gorgeous Maine Lake House Available (MDI - Abuts Acadia National Park) The Perfect Maine Summer Getaway! An outstanding antidote to the rest of your busy year! Our beautiful Maine lake house is currently available July 23-30 (2011) due to a renter's last minute schedule change. So if you're flexible, we can discuss! It'll be priced to move at this late date. It's available again from September 3rd for an odd ten day period until Tuesday September 13th (again, flexible on price for that time), then again from Sunday Sept 18th on through the end of the month or through Columbus Day (2011), should there be interest that late in the season. July and August are at the rate quoted ($1650/week) while June and September weeks are at reduced rates. Further discounts given for continuous two or more week rentals. Rates might be ever-so-slightly higher for 2012. Our place is a (not so) little slice of heaven on the quiet side of Mount Desert Island. It's perfect for the three R's - readin', relaxin', and re-connectin' with friends and family, as well as swimming, hiking, berry-picking, and hammock-ing. Take a look at our online photo album (in the 'personal website' section here) and you'll see what we mean. We have 16+ pristine acres of secluded field, forest and conservation easement-protected lakeshore property that's no more than 15-20 minutes away from anywhere on the island - Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Martha Stewart's digs, and all the trails, carriage paths and pleasures of word-renowned Acadia National Park. You can also swim, canoe or sail(in our canoe or little sailboat) across the absolutely serene, pristine and secluded lake and start exploring the park right then and there as our property abuts Acadia. The house is a 140+ year old farmhouse that's been tastefully converted for simple pleasures, comfort, great food and a stunning view of wildflowers and gentle mountains. Banks of Andersen windows showcase the amazing view from the house and open to let the wonderful cool Maine air in on hot days. A wrap-around deck and hammock are yours to enjoy, sunbathe on, or just sit there and relax with friends, cocktails, or a good book. And speaking of good books, we've got bookshelves filled with 'em for readers of all ages. There is a master bedroom and a large guest bedroom on the first floor and two smaller bedrooms (great for kids) on the 2nd floor/loft level (one with two twin beds, one with an antique wrought iron full-sized bed). The house sleeps 6-8 comfortably, as there's just one bathroom on the first floor. Our full kitchen has a new dishwasher and all the amenities: toaster, electric stove, blender, and all the pots and pans, dishes and cutlery you'll need. No microwave (we don't believe in 'em) and no TV (trust us, we've gone up for years and years for a month at a stretch with small children and never missed it once - and yes, you can get Red Sox games on the radio up there). Brand new, efficient clothes washer and dryer and a line outside in our little apple orchard for drying with that summery fresh smell, if you like. Close to the freshest seafood you can eat, an organic farmer's market (with delicious homemade pies!), amazing hikes and ocean strolls, the house is the perfect way to recharge your batteries for the rest of the year. Grab a week or two (heck, or three) up there -- you'll thank yourself for years to come! Let us know if you’re interested in spending some quality r&r (the house is well-stocked with puzzles, cards, boardgames, etc.) at our vacation home in paradise, but don't dally, the weeks tend to book up pretty quickly. Happy vacationing, and hope to hear from you!

 Amenities

The house has linens, pots, pans and all manner of cutlery, a new dishwasher, washer, dryer (and outdoor line if you'd like), toaster, coffee maker, fridge, electric stove, clean, delicious well water, Weber 'kettle-style' Charcoal Grill, kid's lifejackets, whiffle balls and bats, lots of books games and board games for both kids (cards, Yahtzee, Scrabble, Connect Four, Boggle, jigsaw puzzles, etc.) and grownups alike. It's got rocking chairs, cushioned chairs, a sectional sofa and a wood-burning stove for chilly nights. There's a path through the field and a small stand of trees down to the lake (it's about a two minute walk). Across the lake (easily swimmable - our young kids have done it, or canoe-able) is Acadia National Park. And the lake is absolutely pristine.

 Attractions

The house is on the quiet side of Mount Desert Island but is no more than 15-20 minutes from anywhere else on the island - Bass Harbor, Southwest Harbor, Bar Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Seal Harbor, all of Acadia National Park's world-class (and world-famous) hikes, bike rides, carriage roads and trails, etc. The property is on a lake. The other side of the lake (a quick swim or canoe ride) abuts Acadia, so you can start exploring right there. In addition, there's amazing, fresh seafood all around, great restaurants all over the island, fresh baked organic pies and fruit nearby, the Criterion Movie Theater (a national landmark) and all the shops and stores in Bar Harbor, Jordan Pond House and the Bubbles, Bass Harbor Light House, Wonderland, Sea Wall, Greathead, Sand Beach, etc. etc.

 Rates

June: $1525/week July & August: $1650/week September: $1250/week October (through Columbus Day) $1050/week Small discounts given for renting 2 or more consecutive weeks.

 For Sale

While the house is a family treasure, we're now on the wrong side of the country for it to continue making sense for us for the long haul. So we're up for entertaining serious offers for the potential sale of our unique and exquisitely beautiful, peaceful, house and land. The waterfront has been placed in a conservation easement. If this is not something that makes sense to you, (keeping our lakefront pristine and undeveloped) then we suggest you look elsewhere. But if you're in New York, Boston, Connecticut or Rhode Island, and are looking for that truly special place for the family to get away to - and rent when you're not there, then we have a gem that you should really consider.
