 Description

On the Big Island, our family says "E Komo Mai", and welcome to Kehena Beach Guest House. Our home is located in one of the most beautiful places on earth, the little known Puna Coast. It is south of an active volcano in the laid back community of Puna Beach Palisades. We are three short blocks from the old Red Road which hugs the water and leads to Kehena Beach. This is a black sand beach surrounded by towering lava cliffs. It is the sight of an ancient Hawaiian village and when you are sunning and hitting the waves in the rugged and charming water you will feel the spirit and soul of the islands. We call where we live Moe'uhane Hale or Dream House and when you see it you will know why. This two story modern house sits on a lava flow from 1955. Our family resides on the top story where we have a lanai that looks out into the distance to the sea and our guests are given the sanctity of the bottom floor. We have two terrific rooms. One is called "Maluhia" which means Peace and the other room is known as "Moena" or Resting Place for we hope that when you come to Moe'uhane Hale you will find tranquility as we have. The common room is filled with many interesting books and a place to lounge either inside or out as you enjoy our island breakfast of coffee, juice, and a variety of delicious homemade goodies. The guest floor has its own private entrance and there is a lovely shared bathroom with even lovelier creams and soaps to spoil your skin.

 Amenities

Our two beautiful rooms are called Peace (Maluhia) and the Resting Place (Moena). Both rooms have queens size beds, reading lights, ceiling fans and in room closets to hang your clothes. The Bathroom is a shared space that is cleaned and tidied once a day. We encourage you to respect the others who stay in the house with you by refreshing the bathroom as you use it. Towels, soap and lotions are provided. The Common area and Patio is where breakfast is served. We provide you with coffee, a selection of teas, juice, fresh fruit, muffins and Hawaiian bread toast and cold cereal. We try to make our own jams and our own granola. We hope you enjoy them. Other Thangs! In this Common area we also have a library of books so you can escape the sun from time to time and enjoy some quite time, a table and chairs, and a small refrigerator to store any goodies you buy. Shelves in the fridge are named by room so you can keep your stash straight. Outside on the patio are rocking chairs to while away the time as you look out onto the black lava hillside. We got a no shoe policy. Several reasons for that. 1. Bare feet help you relax! And 2. The black sand from the beach gets in the bed and keeps you awake! So clean out your shoes and bring an extra pair of slippers if you wanna wear something inside the house. No smoking inside but go ahead and light up on the patio. Use the ash trays - the lava don't like butts. You can park your car in a designated spot. There are no phones in the rooms, this ain't no Holiday Inn - but if you have to make a call we can help you by letting you use our home phone. Beach Towels. We almost forgot. We got beach towels available but just remember, don't bring them inside the house. The sand gets all over and makes a mess and a mess in paradise is no fun. So leave the beach towels in the basket outside and we will put fresh ones out for you the next day. And for free - you get a smile every time you see us and as much knowledge as we have about Pahoa town and the coast we call 'home'. But if you don't wanna see us we won't bother you. Aloha and get your butt over here and relax ASAP!

 Attractions

The Puna coast is a natural wonderland. We have always loved secrets and this piece of the earth is one of the best. Lets take a journey on the Red Road which hugs the Puna Coast. If you go out to the road from our house (the road you came in on) and turn right you get to Kehena Beach.(clothing optional) Sundays are wild but every day is beautiful, It's a steep climb down but the reward is hefty. Black sand and rugged waves. To really enjoy this bay, you need to be aware of the currents but if you are you can be refreshed over and over again by the cool water and if the luck of the Hawaiian gods is with you ' you can swim with dolphins. Leave Kehena Beach and go all the way north to Kanapala (just keep going til you can't go no more) you will get to a parking lot where there is a little visitor center, a small burger stand and a path that leads out onto the black lava and to the ocean. This walk on hard shiny black lava is stark like a little trek on a modernist painting. It is worth the venture. Take good shoes, a towel and lots of sunscreen. There is no shade. In the distance you can see old Kalapana town that was eaten by the lava and the new houses that sit upon the black surface. A little like a Hawaiian village on Mars. If you go back south on Red Road toward our house and then continue on - you will visit a lovely piece of the Big Island.. To your right is the Pacific Ocean. Pass Seaview, a little Puna community and you will soon see the jungle creep over head as you begin to travel through a tunnel of green. Soon you will find the Red Road tide pools. They sit along the coast and are sometimes filled with water and sometimes not. You will see a car parked here or there, someone fishing off steep rocks and a series of tide pools where you can wade and study the creatures of the sea,This little patch is primo Puna.. Keep going down the road and you will come to the hot ponds which are wonderful but controversial. We will post a link to the pros and cons of the hot ponds. Next is the boat dock and new state park where the surfers glide out into the ocean. You can be a participant if you like or just watch. There are picnic tables and bathrooms here. Down the road is one last stop as Red Road turns into Old Government Road. This is Kapoho where there are world class tide pools. At the first entrance to Kapoho (neither is marked very well) you can drive all the way in. At the second entrance there is a gate. If you park your car and walk in you will find the Champagne Ponds that are to the far end of the tide pools and are one of the best places to swim on the Puna Coast. All of Kapoho has a multitude of tropical fish and we almost always get a glimpse of a sea turtle. We continue on this road til we come to Honolulu Park in Hawaiian Beaches. This road is really old Hawaii. Lush tropical rain forest on a road that is the sight of ancient Hawaiian burial grounds.
