Immediate to the Cottage - Gloucester Road is one of the oldest streets in Cheltenham Spa, a main service road to Cheltenham Spa Railway Station. This quiet Victorian cottage has many traditional features giving the feel of the surrounding area as typical of this town. In 1716 the pigeons were seen pecking at the ground of a field in the village of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, which revealed the existence of a hidden underground spring. Perhaps the birds were drawn by the salt deposited in the ground by the mineral springs. The discovery transformed a sleepy town into one of the most popular spas in England, this prompted the citizens of Cheltenham to incorporate the lowly pigeon into the town crest. When King George III visited the 'pump room' at Cheltenham in 1788, the fortunes of the town took a turn for the better. Forever transformed, the prestige of royal patronage made Cheltenham one of the places to see and be seen, perhaps even now with various noted colleges, bars and restaurants, this remains true for Cheltenham. Building work incorporated new wells being built, and the fashionable pump rooms opened and a building boom ensued, to accommodate the visitors, the Regency terrace was developed.
