Description
|
|
Located a few miles North of the desirable West coast region known as
the 'platinum coast', the Mill House is an antique gem. It was built
in the 1790’s as part of a sugar plantation called Friendly Hall and
has been recently restored in a simple but attractive manner. It has
the atmosphere of a French country house, with thick coral walls and
high ceilings that keep it pleasant and cool without the need for air-
conditioning. French doors off the living and dining rooms open onto
secluded patios. The original Mill Tower remains in the fenced yard,
surrounded by coconut and sago palm trees, spider lilies, and
brilliantly colored frangipani and bouganvillea.

Amenities |
|
In addition to the gracious living and dining rooms, there are 3
simply furnished bedrooms, each with a pair of twin beds, and 2 simple
bathrooms, each with a shower and hairdryer. Two bedrooms have a
ceiling fan; the other has a floor fan. The kitchen, which seats six,
is equipped with a modern stove, refridgerator, microwave, blender,
coffee maker, toaster, pots/pans, dishes and cutlery. There is a
radio-CD player (but no TV) and an eclectic collection of CDs and
books. The patios have butterfly chairs, a chaise longue, and table
and chairs. There is a phone (for local calls) that can be used for
dial-up internet access. A cell phone is available - just buy a phone
card for it.
House-cleaning service is provided once a week; additional cleaning
service, laundry (washer & dryer on site), babysitting, and meal
preparation can also be arranged. Wayne Skeete, a longtime friend of
the Mill House, oversees the property and manages the grounds. He is
an excellent troubleshooter and is tremendously helpful with regard to
anything Bajan. He can arrange a rental car (WHICH IS NEEDED, as the
Mill House is not in town) and can use it to meet people at the
airport and bring them to the Mill House for $25 US.

Attractions |
|
Perhaps the principal attraction of the Mill House is its beauty -
it is the opposite of the typical bland and personality-free rental
unit. Another striking feature is its isolation from the centers of
tourism. This makes it ideal for some (aspiring novelists, for
example) and non-ideal for others.
Nearby Speightstown, the capital of St. Lucy’s Parish, is a market
town dating from the 18th century. About a 10 minute drive from the
Mill House, it has a well-stocked supermarket, daily markets with
local produce, banks, ATM machines, restaurants and more. The Fish Pot
restaurant (in Little Good Harbor) and the best fish fry on Barbados
(Merton's, at Half Moon Fort) are even closer. Fishermen sell their
catch most afternoons along the road from the Mill House to S’town, in
a little community called ‘Six Mens’. Holetown, about 10 minutes south
of S’town, boasts gourmet food and wine shops and an abundance of
restaurants. Golf, tennis, boat rentals, water sports and more are
available all along the west coast. Many lovely beaches are a short
drive away, and the lovely and usually deserted beach at Maycock's Bay
is a 20 minute walk (across fields and down the bluff).
